Freed in Jefferson's will and granted $300, Burwell Colbert purchased several items at the 1827 estate sale, including a mule and print portraits of Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette. The widowed Colbert’s children were the property of Jefferson's son-in-law and were not offered for sale.
